RosterVerdict begins with a problem that normal football statistics do not solve well.
A wide receiver can finish a season with more yards and touchdowns than a receiver on another team. That does not automatically mean he is the better or more valuable player. The two players may work in very different offenses. One team may throw the ball far more often. Another may spread targets among several receivers, use its tight ends heavily, or build the offense around the running game. Raw production reflects the player, but it also reflects opportunity, scheme, teammates, game situation, and coaching choices.
The same problem becomes even clearer at positions where yards and touchdowns tell us very little. An offensive lineman can be essential to his team without producing the familiar statistics used for quarterbacks, receivers, or running backs. A tight end can be a major part of an offense as a blocker even if he catches relatively few passes.
Availability creates another problem. A player may be outstanding when he is on the field but miss half the season because of injuries, suspensions, or other absences. Age and career stage matter too: past performance does not guarantee that the same level will continue next season. Contract cost also matters because every dollar committed to one player limits what the team can spend elsewhere.
That is why we created Roster Value.
Roster Value is a 0–99 estimate of a player’s value to his current team in the upcoming season. It is not a score of what the player achieved last year. It is an estimate of the football value he may be able to provide next year, in the role his team is expected to give him, under the uncertainty that exists today.
This idea is the foundation of RosterVerdict. We calculate Roster Value for the players who arrived, departed, and stayed. We then use those player-level values to understand changes in position rooms, units, the main playing core, and the team as a whole.
1. Why traditional player comparisons are not enough
The simple idea: Production statistics describe what happened, but they do not fully explain what a player can mean to a different team next season.
NFL players do not operate in identical environments. Their statistics are shaped by offensive or defensive scheme, coaching decisions, teammates, game scripts, opponent strength, and the number of opportunities available to them.
Consider two wide receivers. One may record more yards because his team throws frequently and directs a large share of its targets toward him. Another may play in a run-heavy offense, share targets with several strong teammates, or be asked to create space for others. The first player has better counting statistics, but those numbers alone do not prove that he has greater value in every team context.
Some roles are also difficult to compare through traditional production. Offensive linemen, blocking tight ends, rotational defenders, special-team specialists, and many depth players contribute in ways that are not captured by one universal box-score statistic.
Roster Value therefore does not try to rank all players by one visible production number. It asks a different question: how much useful football value can this player reasonably provide to this team next season?
2. Roster Value is forward-looking
The simple idea: Roster Value estimates next season, not last season.
Player Roster Value is a score from 0 to 99. It represents our estimate of the value a player may provide to his current team during the coming season.
Past evidence is important, but the score is not a reward for past achievements. A player does not receive a high Roster Value simply because he once had an excellent season, was a famous draft prospect, or remains a recognizable name.
The estimate looks forward. It asks what role the player is likely to have, how often he may be available, where he is in his career, how much relevant NFL experience he brings, how well he knows the team, and whether his cost makes sense in the wider roster.
The result is a roster-asset estimate. It is designed to help explain team building, not to declare who is the most talented player in isolation.
3. Role comes before style
The simple idea: Two players can have the same chance of starting even when their jobs look very different on the field.
Different coaches can ask very different things from players at the same position.
For one team, a starting tight end may be primarily a receiver. He may run routes, create mismatches, and receive important targets near the end zone. For another team, the starting tight end may be used mainly as a blocker who helps the running game and protects the quarterback.
Their statistics may look very different, but both can still have a strong chance of being the starting tight end. Roster Value recognizes the starting role without assuming that every starter must create value in the same way.
This is why Role Score is the central role component of Roster Value. It estimates the player’s chance of earning a place in the starting lineup for the coming season. A score of 92 can be read as roughly a 92% chance of starting. A score around 46 suggests a much less secure position and a real risk that the player will not make the Week 1 roster. For players with NFL history, snap participation and established usage provide important evidence. For rookies and players with limited history, roster status, draft investment, team context, and reviewed projection become more important.
Role Score is not a talent grade. It is a forward-looking estimate of starting probability, and it should be read as an approximation rather than a guarantee.
4. How we approach talent without pretending to measure it directly
The simple idea: We do not claim to measure pure talent. We use evidence of how NFL decision-makers value the player.
Talent is real, but it is difficult to reduce to one objective number. Film evaluation is valuable, but it also includes human judgment, scheme preferences, and disagreement between evaluators.
RosterVerdict therefore does not present Roster Value as a direct measurement of talent. Instead, the model uses evidence that reflects how coaches, general managers, and the league have valued the player.
Draft Pedigree records the level of investment made when the player entered the NFL. A player selected early was generally viewed as having greater potential and was given a stronger opportunity path. That information becomes less decisive as a player builds an NFL career, but it remains useful context, especially for rookies and players with limited professional evidence.
Snap participation shows whether coaches have trusted the player with a meaningful role. It helps us distinguish between years spent in the league and actual time spent contributing on the field.
Expected role, roster status, continuity with the team, and other evidence also help describe the level of responsibility the organization appears willing to give the player.
None of these inputs proves who is the most talented. Together, they provide a more objective foundation than reputation, personal preference, or one season of box-score production.
5. The components of Player Roster Value
The simple idea: Roster Value combines several kinds of evidence because no single number can describe a player’s future value.
Player Roster Value is built from several components. Each describes a different part of the player’s value to the team. The exact formulas, weights, thresholds, and internal decision rules remain proprietary.
The simple idea: How likely is the player to earn a place in the starting lineup?
Role Score is our estimate of a player’s chance of earning a place in the starting lineup for the coming season. A Role Score of 92 can be read as roughly a 92% chance that the player will be a starter. A score around 46 points to a much less secure position: the player is more likely to be competing for a roster place and may be released before Week 1. The number is a model estimate, not a guarantee. It uses established NFL usage where reliable history exists and reviewed projection where it does not.
The model focuses on whether the player is likely to hold a starting-level role, not on forcing every starter at the position to contribute in the same style.
The simple idea: How many complete regular-season games can the team reasonably expect from the player?
A player cannot provide value from the sideline. Expected Games estimates how many regular-season games the team can reasonably expect the player to be available for in the coming season.
Availability is not only about injuries. Suspensions, disciplinary issues, legal matters, roster restrictions, and other known risks can also prevent a player from taking the field.
A highly productive player who regularly misses large parts of the season may provide less total roster value than his per-game performance suggests. Expected Games helps place that risk inside the overall evaluation.
The simple idea: What does the player’s past availability tell us about future risk?
Durability describes the historical availability record that supports the forward-looking Expected Games estimate. Recent seasons generally provide more relevant evidence than distant seasons, while unusual circumstances require context.
Durability is not a medical diagnosis and does not guarantee future health. It is a structured way to recognize that availability is part of player value.
The simple idea: How much real NFL playing time has the player accumulated?
Experience is based on actual NFL participation, not simply the number of years since the player entered the league. A player can remain on rosters for several seasons without playing much, while another can build substantial experience quickly.
The useful amount and type of experience also differ by position and football phase. The model therefore treats relevant playing time as stronger evidence than a simple career-length label.
The simple idea: How familiar is the player with this team, unit, coaches, and role?
Continuity reflects recent, role-relevant experience with the same team. A player who already understands the system and has established relationships within the unit may carry less transition risk than an equally experienced newcomer.
Continuity does not automatically make a player better. It describes the practical value of familiarity and the reduced uncertainty that can come with it.
The simple idea: Is the player approaching, within, or moving beyond the usual peak stage for his position?
Players change as their careers develop. Young players often improve with experience. Veterans may remain effective for a long time, but age-related decline becomes more likely at different stages depending on position.
Prime Score places the player within the typical career curve for his position. It helps the model look forward rather than assuming that last season will repeat unchanged.
Prime Score is not a claim about the individual player’s physical condition. It is age-related context, not destiny.
The simple idea: How strongly did the NFL value the player’s potential when he entered the league?
Draft Pedigree reflects the original level of draft investment. It is especially useful when little NFL playing history exists and the model must rely more heavily on how teams evaluated the player’s potential.
Draft position becomes less important as reliable professional evidence grows. An early selection does not remain permanently superior to a later pick, and Draft Pedigree is not the same as current trade value.
The simple idea: Does the player’s cost make sense for the role and value the team expects to receive?
NFL rosters operate under a salary cap. A star player can provide great football value and still create a roster-building cost if his contract prevents the team from strengthening other positions.
Contract Fit considers the relationship between current cost, expected role, positional context, and availability. It does not treat expensive players as automatically bad or cheap players as automatically good.
The purpose is to recognize opportunity cost. Money committed to one player cannot be committed somewhere else.
6. Why the scale runs from 0 to 99
The simple idea: The score gives every player one common roster-value language without pretending to offer impossible precision.
Player Roster Value is displayed on a scale from 0 to 99.
The scale allows players with very different positions, roles, ages, experience levels, and roster situations to be discussed within one system. A higher score means that the player is expected to provide more value to his current team in the coming season.
The score is not a percentage chance of success, a scouting grade, or a prediction of exact production. The difference between two scores should be read as a structured difference in expected roster value, not as proof that one player will outperform another in every situation.
No player receives 100 because no player offers perfect, risk-free, unlimited value. Every projection contains uncertainty.
7. From Player Roster Value to Team Roster Value
The simple idea: We calculate player value first, then build the team evaluation from the players most likely to matter.
To understand whether a team improved, RosterVerdict calculates Roster Value for players who arrived, departed, and remained with the team.
The offseason creates a practical problem. Teams can temporarily carry around 90 players before final roster cuts. Counting every offseason body would make active teams look stronger simply because they have more names under contract.
RosterVerdict therefore evaluates a season-useful group of approximately 60 players. This reflects the 53-player active roster plus additional players who may contribute during the season through elevations, replacements, reserve movement, or other roster changes.
The goal is not to predict the exact final 53 before camp ends. The goal is to represent the group of players most likely to provide meaningful value during the season while preventing temporary camp numbers from inflating the team score.
We also evaluate the main playing core: the strongest and most important players expected to take the field regularly. Modern NFL football uses rotations, personnel packages, nickel defenses, multiple receiving groups, and specialists, so the core is broader than a literal list of 22 traditional starters.
The same selection logic is applied to every team and to both sides of every comparison.
8. What we compare
The simple idea: We compare the Roster Value of the team at the end of last season with the Roster Value of the team today.
The Roster Delta framework compares two defined roster states.
Post-Super-Bowl Baseline
The simple idea: This is the roster state before the new offseason changes begin.
The baseline represents the team at the end of the previous season’s roster story. It gives every team a stable starting point.
Current Roster
The simple idea: This is the best reliable picture of the team now.
The current roster reflects confirmed player control, roster status, position, expected role, and the information needed to estimate Roster Value for the coming season.
The same rules on both sides
The simple idea: The old roster and the new roster are valued through the same framework.
A fair comparison cannot use one method for today’s team and a weaker or outdated method for the baseline. Both roster states are evaluated through the same current Roster Value framework.
In simple terms:

The difference in Team Roster Value between those states is the Roster Delta.
9. How a roster move changes the verdict
The simple idea: A move matters only as much as the future Roster Value it adds, removes, or changes.
A signing does not automatically improve a team. A departure does not automatically make it worse.
The effect depends on the Roster Value of the players involved, the roles they are expected to hold, the players they replace or compete with, and the strength of the surrounding position room.
For every meaningful change, we ask:
- Did the team add or lose Player Roster Value?
- Did the expected role in the position room change?
- Did the move improve the main playing core, the depth, or both?
- Did the team become younger, more available, more experienced, more stable, or more cost-efficient?
- How certain are we about the new role and the resulting value?
This is why two transactions with similar headlines can have very different effects. RosterVerdict evaluates the expected football consequence, not the publicity around the move.
10. Position rooms and football context
The simple idea: Team Roster Value tells us whether the roster changed; position-room value tells us where it changed.
A single team number is useful, but it is not enough.
A team may improve at wide receiver while becoming weaker on the offensive line. The secondary may gain depth while the defensive front loses an important rotational player. A strong total score can therefore hide meaningful strengths and weaknesses.
RosterVerdict groups players into consistent position rooms and football phases. This allows us to compare the same parts of the roster across teams while still recognizing different roles within those groups.
Terms such as EDGE, slot, nickel, MIKE, WILL, returner, receiving tight end, or blocking tight end can describe how a player is used. They add football context without replacing the stable primary-position structure needed for comparison.
11. Comparing a team with itself and with the league
The simple idea: A team can become weaker and still remain the best team, or improve and still remain behind its rivals.
Roster Delta answers whether a team became stronger or weaker compared with its own baseline.
That is only one part of the story.
Imagine that the strongest roster in the NFL loses a small amount of value. The team became weaker relative to itself, but it may still rank first in the league. Another team may improve significantly but still remain below the average in its division.
RosterVerdict therefore places Team Roster Value in several contexts:
- Division comparison shows how the team compares with the other teams in its division.
- Conference comparison shows how it compares within its conference.
- League comparison shows how it compares with all NFL teams.
- Schedule-based comparison can show how it compares with the opponents it will actually face.
The important distinction is between change and position. Roster Delta measures movement from the team’s own baseline. Benchmarks show where the current roster stands against relevant competition.
12. Data Confidence and missing information
The simple idea: Roster Value says what we think; Data Confidence says how sure we are.
A precise-looking score can create a false sense of certainty. RosterVerdict therefore keeps Data Confidence separate from Roster Value.
Confidence describes the strength and completeness of the evidence behind the estimate. It can be affected by source quality, recency, sample size, missing seasons, unclear roster status, conflicting information, limited NFL history, and reliance on projection rather than observed use.
A veteran with several seasons of reliable role and availability evidence can have high confidence. A rookie Roster Value can still be useful, but it naturally relies more on projection and should be treated as less settled.
Missing does not mean zero. Unknown draft status is not the same as being undrafted. Missing playing-time history is not automatically zero experience. No NFL durability history does not mean poor durability.
When evidence is limited, the uncertainty should remain visible.
13. Data sources, attribution, and freshness
The simple idea: Roster Value is only useful when the underlying information is reliable, current, and legally usable.
RosterVerdict primarily researches, verifies, and enters information manually from publicly available sources. We do not build the product by scraping or copying websites.
Public facts can be used as inputs into our own analysis and derived Roster Value metrics. Where possible, important information is checked across more than one source. We respect usage rights and provide attribution where required.
We do not republish protected articles, proprietary grades, restricted datasets, photographs, or other protected material as our own.
Roster information can become outdated quickly. A player can change teams, roles, roster status, availability outlook, or expected usage in a short period of time. When the underlying facts change, the affected Roster Value results should also be reviewed and updated.
14. What Roster Value is — and what it is not
The simple idea: Roster Value estimates future roster usefulness, but it does not predict the future with certainty.
Roster Value is a roster-building tool designed to estimate the value a player may provide to his current team in the coming season.
It is not:
- a scouting grade or pure talent score;
- a box-score production ranking;
- a proprietary performance grade;
- a fantasy ranking or Madden rating;
- a replacement for film study;
- a guarantee of future production, health, wins, standings, or final roster decisions;
- a claim that every transaction matters equally;
- a claim that expensive players are automatically bad or cheap players are automatically good;
- a claim that age, draft position, or past availability determines an individual player’s future.
The purpose is not to eliminate football judgment. It is to reduce avoidable subjectivity, use the same framework across players and teams, and make the assumptions behind the verdict easier to understand and question.
15. Model changes and corrections
The simple idea: When Roster Value improves or the underlying facts are corrected, affected results should be reviewed.
RosterVerdict is a developing analytical product. The Roster Value model can improve as data coverage, implementation quality, and football understanding improve.
When an important component changes, the public explanation should also be updated. Affected player, position-room, core, and team results should be reviewed so that the site does not mix incompatible versions.
Corrections to player identity, team assignment, roster status, role, availability, contract information, or other source facts should flow through to every Roster Value result that depends on them.

The core promise
The simple idea: Roster Value helps us show what changed, why it matters, and how sure we are.
RosterVerdict does not simply report that a team changed. It shows how the team’s Roster Value changed, where that change happened, which players caused it, how the position rooms and playing core were affected, and what evidence supports the conclusion.
The goal is a verdict that is useful without pretending to be unquestionable: objective enough to compare players across very different roles and systems, clear enough for a fan to understand, detailed enough for an analyst to inspect, and transparent enough for either of them to disagree with it intelligently.
