NFL player roster statuses and availability
Player status is layered: the roster list, availability information, and one-game designation each answer a different question.
How to read player status
A player does not have one label that answers every football question. His roster list says where he is held, availability says whether a barrier is known, and the game-day decision says whether he can dress for one specific game.
The reference tables on the main methodology page translate those layers into ordinary football language. A practice report or medical clearance can improve the picture, but neither one by itself makes a player game-eligible.
Next-game rule
The safest answer is based on the latest official game designation, roster status, availability evidence, and any return or administrative restriction together. Unknown is not the same as available.
